2020-02-16 Art Year 2019 in Review

2019 was an exceptional year for art with many memorable experiences, milestones, and encounters! While I didn’t have time to post frequently, this review summarizes the year’s highlights. I have divided the post into three sections: artworks, exhibitions and publications, press and mentions.

2019 Artworks

In preparation for my solo exhibition and encouraged by the growing opportunity to show digital art, I expanded both my physical and digital portfolios. Below, I list the main pieces that I created:

Aggregate of Hope - Digital Art

Aggregate of Hope
A live visualization of the 24-hour Bitcoin exchange rate trend through cloud videos, tokenized as a locked CounterParty access token in a limited edition of three.

Cloud Hashes - Digital Art

Cloud Hashes (Triptych)
Three visualizations of the Bitcoin SHA-256 hash algorithm – tokenized videos with a limited print series in editions of five. Augmented reality video layers enhance the prints.

Tokenized Cloudspheres - Digital Art

Tokenized Cloud Sphere Series
Collages of photos taken on passenger flights – tokenized on SuperRare and KnownOrigin, along with a limited print series in editions of five. Augmented reality video layers enhance the digital files and prints.

Encrypted Block Cloudscape - Artwork

Weaving Algorithms Series
Following simple algorithms, woven acrylics on paper and vinyl paintings were sliced and reassembled. The series depicts algorithms and encryption as weaving patterns.

Exclamatory Intermezzo - Paintings

Exclamatory Intermezzo Expansion
I added several pieces to my ongoing series of acrylics on woven, hand-cut, and laser-cut paper paintings. The series visualizes processes in the blockchain environment.

Imaginary Diagrams - Digital Art

Imaginary Diagrams Series
A series of ten intuitively guided acrylics-on-paper paintings. Six pieces were enhanced with subtle animations and tokenized on SuperRare and KnownOrigin.

2019 Exhibitions

My first solo exhibition Tropopause Contemplation – Blockchain Technology and Inclusive Decentralization was a significant highlight. I wrote a blog post about this milestone and included a short video; you can find the blog post here.

I also participated in two international crypto art events: the Rare Arts Festival 2 at the Bushwick Generator in Brooklyn, NY, and the iDAF International Digital Arts Festival at the Federation House in Manchester, England. It was great connecting with many crypto artists and people in the crypto art world in person.

Here is an overview of the exhibitions and art festivals in which I participated last year:

2019 Publications, Press & Mentions

Another major highlight was the position paper on crypto art (the new digital art movement linked to Blockchain technology) that I co-authored.

Position Paper Crypto Art - A Decentralized View

Entitled “Crypto Art – A Decentralized View,” the paper was initiated by data scientists Massimo Franceschet (University of Udine) and Giovanni Colavizza (University of Amsterdam) and included perspectives by art historians T’ai Smith and Blake Finucane (University of British Columbia), art collector Sebastian Hernandez (Momus Collection), gallerists Jonathan Perkins (SuperRare) and James Morgan (KnownOrigin), and artists Sergio Scalet (Hackatao) and myself.

You can read my summary blog post here or the full paper on arXiv.org. A few weeks ago, we received confirmation that the paper will be published in the Leonardo art and science journal.
